about
A good friend of mine once compared going to therapy to taking your car in to get serviced. I thought about that a lot before my wife gave birth to our son, Maxwell. I was in therapy, and wanted to make sure that I was mentally fit to welcome my first child into the world, and step up my game as a partner. That became the inspiration for the lyrics of “Moving out West”. The song is about checking in with yourself, the way you would take your car in before a big move/road trip. I wanted to check in with myself to see what blind spots I might have, and do a better job of addressing my anxiety, and go back to childhood, to see if there was any weird stuff that still needed unpacking. Sonically, we wanted the tune to have a windows down, blazing down the highway, road trip kind of feel, which I think we accomplished.
lyrics
Moving out West (3:12)
I’m listening close for any sounds I know I shouldn’t be hearing now
I open up the hood and take a look around
Oh, everything is gonna change
Forever in a day
Moving out west, moving out west
Oh we’re moving out west, moving out west
Give this little heart flickering a better chance
Oh we’re moving out west, moving out west
I want it to run better than the one that I was taken to school in
Uncovering all of my blindspots, doing the work, doing the work
Oh, everything is gonna change
Forever in a day
Forever in a day
Moving out west, moving out west
Oh we’re moving out west, moving out west
Give this little heart flickering a better chance
Oh we’re moving out west, moving out west
And in the distance I see a million lights, how bright they shine
And in the distance I see our dreams come true
I hope they do
Moving out west, moving out west
Oh we’re moving out west, moving out west
Give this little heart flickering a better chance
Oh moving out west, moving out west
Yeah we’re moving out west, moving out west
Yeah we’re moving out west, moving out west
Yeah we’re moving out west, moving out west
